Well, that bidding has concluded, and the winning bid was a whopping $173,102 (SCP Auctions Thomson cap page).

The history behind the home run: Thomson’s New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers ended the regular season tied after the Giants ran down the Dodgers from a jaw-dropping 13 1/2 game deficit. The two then played a three-game playoff series to determine which club would advance to the World Series. In Game 3 of the series, Thomson came to bat against Ralph Branca and represented the go-ahead run.
