A wristwatch once worn by Lou Gehrig will go up for auction Wednesday, the crown jewel among the sports collectibles being sold online by Laguna Niguel-based SCP Auctions.

But the Gehrig watch is more than a timepiece. It’s a time capsule, an artifact of an age when watches were worn with both purpose and pride.
