THE CHUCK DALY COLLECTION
The late Chuck Daly was a former NBA head coach who led the Detroit Pistons to consecutive titles in 1989 and ‘90, and the United States Men’s Olympic Basketball Team – nicknamed the “Dream Team” – to the gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. A native of St. Mary’s, Pennsylvania and a graduate of Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, Daly is also a two-time Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, having been inducted in 1994 for his individual coaching career, and again posthumously in 2010 as the head coach of the “Dream Team.” Daly lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in May of 2009 at the age of 78.
Known for his ability to create harmony out of diverse personalities at all levels of the game, Daly could bridge differences between Dream Teamers like Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley as well as Pistons teammates as dissimilar as Dennis Rodman and Joe Dumars. Daly once said: “It’s a players’ league. They allow you to coach them or they don’t. Once they stop allowing you to coach, you’re on your way out.”
In 1996, he was voted one of the 10 greatest coaches of the NBA’s first half-century. He was also the first coach to win both NBA and Olympic titles. As an NBA head coach for 14 seasons – nine of those spent in Detroit – Daly posted an overall record of 638-437, good enough for a .593 winning percentage. When it came to the postseason, his teams went 75-51 (.595) and reached the NBA Finals three consecutive years, winning twice. During the course of his prolific coaching career, Daly picked up several mementoes and key pieces of sports memorabilia many of which are included in SCP Auctions’ 2015 Mid-Summer Classic. Every one of the items comes with exceptional provenance.
